What does a refrigerator consist of ?

Refrigerators consists of 5 major areas.  Frame, Interior plastic, Insulation Material,Refrigerant and Components such as motor, damper, coil, defrost heater, and control board. The frame is vital to the durability and longevity of your unit. Stainless steel and aluminum are the most common frames. The interior plastic makes up 40% of the refrigerator.  Insulation material serves the purpose of keeping items cold. Polyurethane foam keeps cold in and heat out. Freon gas is the most common refrigerant used in refrigerators. Lastly the working components keep the refrigerator running. To prevent common refrigerator problems  keep these parts up and running. The key elements being the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator. The process of Refrigeration is similar to what happens in your air conditioner. The refrigerant is passed through all 4 components. Once passed through the compressor the refrigerant gets hot. Next it passes through the condenser where the refrigerant becomes cold. The expansion valve reduces refrigerant pressure which results in the refrigerant becoming a cold liquid. Last step is the evaporator where the liquid refrigerant is boiled across the evaporator and repeats the cycle as cool vapor.

Common Refrigerator Problems and what you can do to fix them. Try these tips before calling a technician.

1.Temperature not cold enough ?  Cool Temperature is necessary for keeping your food fresh. Any changes or fluctuations can spoil any fresh food in a short amount of time. If you notice temperature increasing in your  refrigerator, In most instances  common refrigerator problems stem from the freezer.

Solution : Check the Freezer wall make sure it is cold. If it is cold check the evaporator fan to see if it is functional. Like we touched on before, the process of refrigeration is a 4 step process. If any component isn’t working correctly the refrigerator will be unusually warm. If the evaporator works then dust off the compressor to stop the problem.

2.My ice maker is overflowing ?  Ice makers tend to break down easily. If the ice maker is overflowing. There may be a problem with the water inlet valve. When water pressure is low the valve can leak into the ice maker.

Solution: Make sure the water pressure reads at least 20 psi. If you have the appropriate water pressure but still seeing problems. Then  look into the water inlet valve.

3.Refrigerator is freezing my food?  A common refrigerator problem is  your refrigerator freezing your food. A temperature control thermostat regulates the temperature by controlling the power supply to the compressor and evaporator motor. A faulty thermostat may be responsible for freezing your food.

Solution: Rotate thermostat to the lowest setting and the highest setting. If you hear a click your thermostat is still working. If you don’t hear a click replace the thermostat. You can also make sure that the damper is working properly.

4.Refrigerator making strange noise? A noisy refrigerator is a common problem that can keep you up all night. It is not only a nuisance but can result in a larger than average energy bill. The common culprit that can cause a noisy refrigerator is the fan blade. If your refrigerator is loud – either the evaporator or condenser blade is not turning freely.

Solution: Check the fan by removing the power and then remove the rear access panel.  Check for any dust or any obstructions in the fan’s movement.

5.Refrigerator leaking water?  A wet floor signals a bigger problem. Yet it can be solved with a simple fix. There are two common causes for this common refrigerator problem. It can be caused by a blocked defrost drain. The back of your freezer is where the defrost drain is situated.  Any food or mold buildup  can block  the drain. This causes water to build up and freeze.

Solution: Drain the hole with warm water and a pipe cleaner. The second cause of Water leaks is  a clogged water supply.  This is a multi part problem as it affects the ice maker and water dispenser.

Solution: Unplug the refrigerator and locate the shut-off valve. This is typically located underneath your sink. Close the shut off valve and replace it if broken.
